When working towards your goals or even just in life in general, there will always be some obstacles or roadblocks along the way.
It’s totally natural and it’s just a part of life.
While they’re probably not the most pleasant part of your life, they do have some advantages such as the knowledge, experience, or skills that you gain while overcoming them.
Hopefully, with the help of this guide, you should be able to overcome the obstacles that you are facing and be in a better position than you were before.
7 Tips on Overcoming Obstacles
Overcoming obstacles is not meant to be easy.
However, it’s far from impossible, if you put your mind to it.
To help you with the obstacle you’re facing, I have laid out 7 practical tips that will help you overcome whatever it is you’re facing.
Tip 1: Focus on Your Mindset
Overcoming obstacles is almost always something that comes down to your mindset.
With the wrong mindset, you could give up just before you were about to overcome the obstacle that you are facing.
Being aware that whether you overcome the obstacle is usually down to your mindset, is a big advantage when you do fall into the trap of negative thinking or giving up. Why?
You can pick yourself back up and start getting back on track.
So, always focus on your mindset, stay positive, and see this as an opportunity to grow.
Tip 2: Be Clear on What The Obstacle Is
In order to overcome the obstacle that you are currently facing, you first need to figure out what exactly the obstacle is.
Often when we come across obstacles along the way, we get so caught up in negative thoughts, that our perception of the problem is false and worse than it is.
Take a moment and figure out what exactly it is that you are facing.
Once, you have done so, ask yourself these questions:
- “Are there any obstacles that I have overcome before, that are similar to this one and how did I overcome it?”
- “Who could assist me with this obstacle and how could I reach them?”
- “What do I need to overcome this obstacle and how can I get it?”
“A question opens the mind. A Statement closes the mind.” – Robert Kiyosaki
As the quote by Robert Kiyosaki suggests, questions sometimes open up hidden opportunities, so make sure to ask yourself questions if you feel like you are stuck.
The second question especially is extremely important.
Somebody who has already overcome this obstacle can quite often help us overcome it too.
Tip 3: Manage Your Emotions
Everyone has emotions.
You need to be aware of your emotions and manage them in a way, so that they don’t stop you.
Don’t just let them eat you alive.
Need a break? Take one.
Need to see a friend? Do it.
Be aware of your emotions and take them into consideration.
Tip 4: Focusing and Selective Ignorance
For this tip, I am going to assume, that the obstacle you are facing is one, that you truly want to overcome.
If you truly want to overcome it, you need to focus on it and look for a way to do so.
In order to fully focus, you sometimes have to remove the distractions that keep your mind distracted with things you don’t really care about.
I’m not saying don’t do anything fun until you have overcome this obstacle but limit the distractions around you.
Here are some examples of distractions that usually don’t help you move closer to your goals:
- Social Media
- Video Games
These things can often take up quite a lot of our thoughts, so you should consider limiting them and investing those thoughts into overcoming the obstacle.
Doing this, will help you overcome the obstacle that you have encountered.
Tip 5: Create a Clear Plan
Having a clear plan of how you plan on overcoming this obstacle, will be extremely helpful.
This goes back to the questions we mentioned earlier as well.
Write down what you need to do, who you need to speak to, and whatever else you plan on doing to overcome this obstacle.
When we write down our thoughts and plans, they become more real which means that we are more likely to act on them.
With a clearer mind, you are also more likely to get done what needs to be done.
Tip 6: Mistakes & Small Wins
Along the way, you probably will make some mistakes.
Again, it’s totally natural, and just another opportunity to learn and grow.
Don’t beat yourself up on them and don’t fall into too much negative thinking, that will just stop you from moving forward.
Of course, sometimes this can be quite hard, but you can always mitigate the negative thinking to a point where you can move on and keep moving forward.
Likewise, you will also have some smaller wins along the way.
Use these to think positively and become even more motivated to overcome the obstacle that you are facing.
By training yourself to do this, you’re going to become a lot better at overcoming obstacles.
Tip 7: Don’t Give Up
When overcoming obstacles, it often helps if you don’t ever plan on giving up.
If you don’t give up, you can’t lose.
Eventually, you will find a way to overcome the obstacle that you are facing.
The only choice you have in-between is whether or not you give up.
You may along the way think that you have found a better way of overcoming the obstacle and that is fine, just make sure to put a lot of thought into every decision you make.
If you do encounter a decision to make like this, make sure that you are only changing the plan, not the goal, unless you truly want to.
Every obstacle is an opportunity to grow and to become a step closer to your goal.
If there wouldn’t be any obstacles along the way, you wouldn’t learn what you need, to reach your goals.
And, if life wouldn’t have any obstacles, it would probably be pretty boring and once you reach your goals, it would probably not feel as sweet.
Stay focused and positive.
